New list of discounted Miles & More redemptions published

Thanks to Miles from Blighty for pointing me towards a new list of discounted Lufthansa Miles & More rewards from the UK.

The official website is here.

Even at a massive discount, the short haul redemptions are a poor deal.

Next week, for example, I am off to Hamburg.  Club Europe on BA is 18,000 Avios + £35 taxes.  Even with a 50%+ discount, LH wants 20,000 M&M miles + £143 per person!

Some of the long-haul deals may be more useful.  Given the taxes and the fact that it is low season, don’t book an Economy reward before checking the cash price first.

Some of the Business Class redemptions are more interesting, eg Atlanta at 55,000 Miles & More miles return compared to 100,000 Avios.

You need to book by February 28th, for travel by March 16th.

Note that Miles & More is NOT an Amex Membership Rewards partner.  You could transfer Amex to Starwood to Miles & More, but even with the Starwood bonus you only get 40,000 Amex MR to 20,000 Starwood SPG to 25,000 Miles & More.  This is an underwhelming 0.625 Lufthansa miles per Amex point.

Miles & More is a BAA WorldPoints partner, but its unlikely that you have enough of those for a major redemption.

Is it not still so that you can pay ~12k miles instead of the taxes on European flights?

Yes you can – but it has gone up sharply. It now costs 18,000 miles to cover £136 of taxes on a Heathrow to Berlin economy ticket. Even with the ticket reduced to 5,000 miles return (which it is!), it still compares badly to Avios – ie Lufty wants EITHER 5k + £136, or 23k + £0. BA wants 9k + £25.

And, of course, ALL Lufthansa flights except those to/from Frankfurt and Munich will be transferred to Germanwings by June. This means you get an easyJet experience instead of a BA one.
