Triple Membership Rewards points on all bookings via Amex Travel

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

As per this web page, Amex is offering triple Membership Rewards points (ie 3 per £1) on all bookings made via the Amex Travel website.

The offer is valid on bookings made up to January 31st.

If you already have a British Airways American Express then you won’t be any better off using an Amex Platinum or Amex Gold to book British Airways travel.  I would also be wary of booking chain hotels via an agent in case you lose your status benefits.

However, this is a very attractive offer for booking, say, non-BA flights.  3 Membership Rewards points per £1 soon mounts up on expensive tickets.

Out of interest, do you know much about Amex Travel Services? Apart from the issues around MR collection, for what kind I purchases can it be economical? I imagine (perhaps falsely) that there’s a hefty mark-up or everything.

  • flyoff says:

I have had some good deals with Amex Travel. The Hilton Frankfurt was half the price of booking direct when I stayed. Hilton also provided Gold benefits of a room upgrade and use of the Executive lounge.

  • Raffles says:

A BA flight on a BA Premium Plus Amex gets double miles, so 3 Avios per £. That is the same as the 3 MR points you get on the Plat.

You are right about Gold, which should get you 4 per £1 and so is better.

And you can skip the credit card charge, as I’m sure you know, by saying on ba.com that your Amex is registered in Ukraine and not UK. I wouldn’t feel guilty about this, BA is still better off than if you book via Amex as no commission is paid!

  • Neil Spellings (@neilspellings) says:

Are there any disadvantages to booking BA flights via Amex travel from a status/points perspective?

Do Amex ask for your BAEC and OnBusiness numbers and pass these onto BA?

    • Raffles says:

You can add these at ba.com under Manage My Booking. You will still earn full miles and OB points. It used to be that if you booked via a travel agent you couldn’t upgrade your flight with Avios, but since last June that has been amended. I don’t think there are any other restrictions.

      • Neil Spellings (@neilspellings) says:

Thanks. I’ve just found that the Amex website doesn’t allow a different return city and departure city, forcing me to use their telephone booking service, which will mean I’ll miss out on the triple points!

Please Amex, update your website to allow multi-city!

It doesn’t even seem to cope particularly well with LON – (destination) – LON journeys. I want to leave from LGW and return to LCY, but no dice. Unless I book two one-ways, which is just a faff.
