Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Iberia Plus introduces “Avios plus Money”

Almost a year after the launch of Avios, Iberia has finally caught up with BA and launched ‘Avios and Money’.

This may be relevant to you, because Iberia redemptions booked on the Iberia website tend to carry far lower taxes than the same flight booked on ba.com (see here for more).

Once your Iberia account has been open for 90 days, you can move Avios points back and forth from BA or avios.com using ‘Combine My Avios’.

A quick trial shows similar pricing to BA.  A Reward Flight Saver from Madrid to Dakar in Business Class will cost you either 40,000 Avios + £34 or, on a sliding scale, down to 20,000 Avios + £194.

You are therefore effectively ‘buying’ 20,000 Avios for 0.8p each, which is a pretty good deal.  I would have taken the 20,000 + £194 option in these circumstances.

The effective price is the same for economy redemptions, which are 20,000 Avios airmiles + £27 down to 10,000 Avios + £107.  Note it prices in Sterling because I am logged in with a UK address.

‘Avios and Money’ only applies to redemptions on Iberia and its subsidiaries, such as Iberia Express and Air Nostrum.

  • Gibraltar Airport Flyer says:

Worth adding that it also includes Vueling, and also British Airways – although you have to use the call centre.

Usefull if you are someone who has some Avios stuck in IB+ due to the 90 days rule (transfer from another scheme etc), so you can’t book by moving it over to your BAEC account.

    • Raffles says:

Interesting, thanks. I tried pricing up a BA redemption online but it didn’t offer Avios & Money as an option.

  • Kane says:

If I change to a European address will it charge the RFS fee in Euros then? How about for BAEC? Does it need to be a real address?

    • Raffles says:

BAEC definitely charges in Euro if you have a Euro address. This saves you 20% of Reward Saver fares, eg Euro 27 instead of £27. However, there are major downsides to having a Euro address – you cannot convert Tesco vouchers (although you can convert them to avios.com and then move them to BA) and you cannot have a BA Amex card.
