40% bonus when you buy Priority Club points

Priority Club, the loyalty scheme for Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental and others, is offering a 40% bonus until 15th October when you buy points.

The maximum you can buy is 50,000 points plus a 20,000 bonus for $575.

Buying points could, in some circumstances, be a better deal than booking a room for cash. You would need to compare.

What is important, though, is that even with a 40% bonus it is still cheaper to effectively ‘buy’ points by doing a ‘cash and points’ redemption and then cancelling it. This gets you points at a net rate of $70 per 10,000. Buying 70,000 this way would cost $490 – still cheaper than $575!

The only reason to buy points in this promotion, therefore, is that they count for Priority Club status. If you are close to the 60,000 points required for Platinum, then it may be worth topping up your account. You should be able to get back what you paid for the points, pretty much, when you redeem them and you will have Platinum status for a year.

Not that Priority Club Platinum status is worth a lot, of course, compared to top-tier status with all of the other hotel chains. However, it is better than nothing and can occasionally get you a nice upgrade or other perk.
