British Airways Executive Club has a slightly odd approach to earning Avios points for childrens flights. In order to open an account for a child, an adult has to turn their BAEC account into a Household Account (HHA) – only then do you see the option to open a new account for a child.
The child’s account can only exist inside a Household Account, and if you break up the HHA, the child’s account is closed and their Avios transferred to the head of the household.
However, you need to think twice before opening a Household Account because no member of one can redeem Avios for anyone outside the HHA. This makes it impossible to issue tickets for friends, unless they too are added to your Household Account. Full details are here if you want to know more.
All of this is a long-winded way to introduce Iberia Plus Kids, Iberia’s recently launched child scheme for children aged 2-11. This is different to BAEC as the child has a stand-alone account.
Until 31st August, Iberia is offering 2,500 Avios when you open a new Iberia Plus Kids account (see pages 14 and 15 of the linked magazine, not ipad friendly).
Now, IB being IB, nothing is totally simple. You need to print off the application form and send it with passport copies of the child and parent, either by post (Apartado de Correos 62033, 28080 Madrid), fax (+34 91 374 27 07) or scanned and e-mailed to ibplusmenores@iberia.es.
However, assuming you get the account opened OK, it should (note, should, I can’t promise!) be possible to later transfer these Avios to your childs BAEC account using ‘Combine My Avios’. Remember that Iberia does not allow transfers in or out of accounts until they are 90 days old, so you won’t be able to get your hands on the miles until October!
