This is a continuation of our series on earning Avios from the partner companies profiled at avios.com.

The world and his wife seem to be running their own mobile phone recycling service these days, so does the Avios service bring anything of value?  Not really, is the answer.

The home page shows that this service is run by Weebuy on behalf of Avios, and that they also accept ipod’s and the like as well as phones.  A typical working Samsung i9000 is worth 5,000 Avios.  Someone flasher, like my old Nokia Sapphire Arte, is quoted at 7,500 Avios.

However, you should never do a trade like this before looking at the excellent Mobile Valuer site run in conjunction with MoneySavingExpert.

This shows that the best price available for a Samsung i9000 is Asda (£110.50) with Weebuy, the operator of the Avios site, offering £100 or £105 in shopping vouchers.  The Nokia Sapphire Arte is worth £192 from MobileCashMate with Weebuy offering just £100.

Whilst this is a small sample, the value placed on an Avios is not good.  I would value 5,000 Avios at £40, so I’d be crazy not to take £110.50 from Asda instead for a Samsung i9000.  Similarly, I’d value 7,500 Avios at £60+ so I’d be taking the £192 from MobileCashMate instead.

It is obviously worth checking out the value at Avios Recycling if you have a phone to sell, but I doubt you’ll be getting the best deal.
